Remove the exhaust mounting bracket between the three-way catalysts right and left bank and the transmission. Remove the alternator and bracket. Remove the exhaust front tube. Remove the steering lower joint at the power steering gear assembly side, and release the steering lower shaft.
Remove the three-way catalysts right and left bank. Remove the exhaust manifold covers. Loosen the nuts in the reverse order as shown in the figure to remove the exhaust manifold.
Remove the exhaust manifold gaskets. Check the surface distortion of each exhaust manifold flange mating surface with a straightedge and feeler gauge.
If it exceeds the limit, replace exhaust manifold. Install new exhaust manifold gaskets. Install each exhaust manifold gasket with its directional protrusion set upward. Refer to the illustration. Install the exhaust manifold mounting nuts in numerical order as shown in the figure.
Tighten nuts No. The numerical order No. Install the exhaust manifold covers. Install the three-way catalysts right and left bank. Install the steering lower joint at the power steering gear assembly side.
Install the exhaust front tube. Install the alternator and bracket. Install the exhaust mounting bracket between the three-way catalysts right and left bank and the transmission.
Install the heated oxygen sensors, as follows: Install the drive belts. Install the radiator. Install the front cross bar. Install the air duct inlet , air cleaner case and mass air flow sensor assembly, air duct and resonator assembly. Install the front and rear engine under covers. Install the engine cover. Fill the engine cooling system with coolant.
Heated oxygen sensor locations Exhaust manifold gasket positioning Remove the air cleaner case and air duct. Remove the front and rear engine undercover and front cross bar. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensors 2 bank 1 and bank 2 wiring harness connectors. Using a heated oxygen sensor wrench , remove heated oxygen sensors 2 bank 1 and bank 2. Remove the three way catalyst right and left bank. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor 1 bank 1 and bank 2 wiring harness connectors and remove the wiring harness clip.
Using the heated oxygen sensor wrench , remove the heated oxygen sensor 1 bank 1 and bank 2. Remove water pipes on both the right and left side. Remove the exhaust manifold cover right and left bank. Loosen the mounting nuts in the reverse order shown in the illustration to remove the exhaust manifold.
Check the surface distortion of the exhaust manifold mating surface with a straightedge and feeler gauge. If it exceeds the limit, replace the exhaust manifold. On installation, locate the thick side of the port connecting part on the right-hand side from your viewpoint. Locate the round press in the thick side of the port connecting part above the center level line of port. Install the manifold and tighten the mounting nuts in the order shown. If the stud bolts were removed, install them and tighten them to the torque specified.
Install the exhaust manifold cover right and left bank. Install the water pipes on both the right and left side. Install the heated oxygen sensor 1 bank 1 and bank 2.
Install the three way catalyst right and left bank. Install the heated oxygen sensors 2 bank 1 and bank 2. Reconnect the heated oxygen sensor wiring harness connectors.
Install the front and rear engine undercover and front cross bar. Install the air cleaner case and air duct. Disconnect each joint and mounting as necessary. When removing main muffler, remove main muffler mounting bracket bolts. Remove exhaust mounting bracket as follows: A.
Remove engine rear undercover. Remove front cross bar. Remove exhaust mounting bracket. Check the accompanying illustration for tightening torques. Exhaust system exploded view Remove the transmission. Remove the flexplate retaining bolts. Remove the felxplate from the engine. When installing the flexplate be sure to correctly align the crankshaft side guide pin and drive side guide pin hole.
Install the flexplate and reinforcement plate, as shown in the illustration. Tighten the mounting bolts to specification and in a crosswise sequence in several passes. NOTE Be sure that the dowel pin is installed at the rear end of the crankshaft. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure. Flexplate alignment and related components Install the flexplate, reinforcement plate and pilot converter, as shown in the illustration. NOTE Face the chamfered or rounded edge side to the crankshaft.

Refer to the fuel injector removal and installation procedure. Disconnect the vacuum hose and water hose from the intake manifold collector upper. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve bracket mounting bolt from the intake manifold collector upper.
Loosen the bolts in the reverse order of the illustration to remove the intake manifold collector upper. Remove the PCV hose between the intake manifold collector and the right-hand rocker cover. Loosen the bolts in the reverse order of the illustration, and remove the intake manifold collector cover, gasket, intake manifold collector lower and gasket. Check the surface distortion of both the intake manifold collector upper and lower mating surfaces with a straightedge and feeler gauge.
If it exceeds 0. Install the intake manifold collector lower. Tighten the mounting bolts in numerical order as shown in the figure. NOTE Tighten mounting bolts to secure gasket lower , intake manifold collector lower , gasket upper , and intake manifold collector cover.

Install new intake manifold gaskets. Install the intake manifold and tighten the mounting bolts in numerical order as shown in the figure. There are two types of mounting bolts. Install the fuel injector and fuel tube assembly. Install the vacuum tank onto the intake manifold lower. Install the intake manifold upper. Connect the water hoses to the water gallery. Install the intake manifold adapter gasket and electric throttle control actuator gasket so that the three protrusions for installation do not face downward.
Tighten the mounting bolts of the electric throttle control actuator equally and diagonally in several steps. Reconnect the wiring harnesses, brackets, vacuum hose, vacuum gallery and PCV hose and tube to the intake manifold upper. Connect the fuel feed hose quick connector on the engine side, the fuel damper and fuel hose assembly.
Fill the engine cooling system with engine coolant. Perform the following drivability adjustments: Perform the Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning procedure below when the wiring harness connector of the electric throttle control actuator is disconnected, or perform the Idle Air Volume Learning and Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning procedures below when the electric throttle control actuator is replaced. Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning 1. The Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning procedure is an operation for the ECM to relearn the fully closed position of the throttle valve by monitoring the throttle position sensor output signal.
It must be performed each time the wiring harness connector of the electric throttle control actuator or ECM is disconnected. Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released. Turn ignition switch ON. Turn ignition switch OFF wait at least 10 seconds. Make sure that throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound.
Idle Air Volume Learning 1. Idle Air Volume Learning is an operation to learn the idle air volume that keeps each engine within the specific range. It must be performed under any of the following conditions: Each time the electric throttle control actuator or ECM is replaced.
Idle speed or ignition timing is out of specification. Before performing the Idle Air Volume Learning procedure, make sure that all of the following conditions are satisfied. Learning will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are missed for even a moment. Battery voltage: More than Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature. Check that all items listed above are properly set.
Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure that idle speed and ignition timing are within specifications. NOTE It is impossible to switch the diagnostic mode when an accelerator pedal position sensor circuit has a malfunction. Turn the ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds. Confirm that the accelerator pedal is fully released, turn the ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
NOTE Repeat the following two steps quickly five times within 5 seconds. Fully depress the accelerator pedal. Fully release the accelerator pedal. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. Start the engine and let it idle. Wait 20 seconds. If idle speed and ignition timing are not within specification, the Idle Air Volume Learning procedure will not be successful. Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning 1. The Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning procedure is an operation for the ECM to relearn the fully released position of the accelerator pedal by monitoring the accelerator pedal position sensor output signal.
It must be performed each time the wiring harness connector of the accelerator pedal position sensor or ECM is disconnected. Make sure that the accelerator pedal is fully released. Turn the ignition switch ON and wait at least 2 seconds. Turn the ignition switch OFF wait at least 10 seconds. Remove the hood assembly. Remove the front and rear engine undercover. Drain the engine oil. Remove the air hose from the air duct to the mass air flow and the electric throttle control actuator side. On AWD models, remove the front left and right halfshafts, and side shaft. Remove the engine rear lower slinger, and install the engine rear slinger tool SST: 31U00 or equivalent to hold the engine assembly in position.
Tighten the engine rear slinger tool mounting bolts to 21 ft. Remove the front suspension member. On AWD models, remove the engine mounting bracket, lower engine mounting bracket and insulator. On AWD models, remove the front driveshaft. On AWD models, remove the oil filter and oil filter bracket.
Remove the alternator stay. On AWD models, remove the front final drive assembly. Remove the crankshaft position sensor POS. Do not disassemble it, do not allow metal powder to adhere to magnetic part at the sensor tip, and do not place sensor in a location where it may be exposed to magnetism. Remove the oil filter, as necessary. Remove the oil cooler, as necessary.
Remove the oil pan lower , as follows: A. Loosen the mounting bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.
Slide the seal cutter by tapping on the side of the tool with a hammer. Remove the lower oil pan. Do not use a flat-bladed screwdriver-this will damage the mating surfaces.
Remove the oil strainer. Remove the transmission joint bolts which pass through the upper oil pan. On 2WD models, remove the rear cover plate.
Loosen the upper oil pan bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence. Remove the upper oil pan. Remove the O-rings from the bottom of the cylinder block and oil pump. Remove the oil pan gaskets. For AWD models, remove the axle pipe from the upper oil pan using a suitable drift, if necessary. Clean the oil strainer, if necessary.
Install the upper oil pan, as follows: A. Use a scraper to remove the old liquid gasket from all mating surfaces. Remove old liquid gasket from the mating surface of the cylinder block, and the bolt holes and threads.
Apply liquid gasket to the oil pan gaskets as shown. Install the new gasket. Align the protrusion of the oil pan gasket with the notches of the front timing chain case and rear oil seal retainer. Install the oil pan gasket with the smaller arc to the front timing chain case side. Install new O-rings on the cylinder block and oil pump. Apply a continuous bead of liquid gasket to the cylinder block mating surface of the upper oil pan to a limited portion as shown.
For bolt holes with marks 5 locations , apply liquid gasket outside the holes. Apply a bead of 0. Installation should be done within 5 minutes after coating.
Install the upper oil pan. Tighten the mounting bolts in the order shown. Refer to the following for locating the bolt positions: M8 x mm 3.
Tighten the transmission joint bolts. Install the oil strainer onto the oil pump. Install the lower oil pan, as follows: A. Use a scraper to remove all old liquid gasket from the mating surfaces. Also remove old liquid gasket from the mating surface of the upper oil pan. Apply new liquid gasket.
Attaching should be done within 5 minutes after coating. Tighten the mounting bolts in numerical order as shown. Install the oil pan drain plug. NOTE Wait at least 30 minutes after the oil pan is installed, fill the engine with new oil. Start the engine, and check there is no leak of engine oil. Stop the engine and wait 10 minutes.
Check the engine oil level again. Exploded view of the oil pan and related components Oil pan mounting bolt tightening sequence Axle pipe installation Drain the engine oil and engine coolant. Remove the accessory drive belts. Remove the auto tensioner for the power steering oil pump belt. Remove the power steering oil pump with the piping connected, and temporarily secure it aside with ropes or equivalent.
Remove the wiring harness of the lower side of oil pan. Remove the crankshaft position sensor POS from the transmission. Install the engine slinger to hold the engine assembly in a secure position. Tighten the slinger mounting bolts to 25 ft. Remove the front final drive assembly. Remove the oil filter. Disconnect the oil cooler water hoses, and remove the oil cooler water pipe and oil cooler. Remove the oil pan as follows: A.
Remove the rear plate cover. Remove the transmission joint bolts which pass through the oil pan. Loosen the oil pan bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence. Insert seal cutter between the oil pan and cylinder block. Slide the seal cutter by tapping on the side of seal cutter with hammer. Remove the oil pan. Remove the O-rings from the bottom of the oil pump and front cover. As necessary, pull the axle pipe from the oil pan. Hold the pipes and pull them out to the left side.
Install the oil strainer. Install the axle pipe to the oil pan, if removed. Lubricate the O-ring groove of the axle pipe, O-ring, and O-ring joint of the oil pan with new engine oil. The O-ring with an identification paint mark must be installed on the left front halfshaft side. Install the axle pipe to the oil pan on the left side.
Install the oil pan as follows: A. Install new O-rings onto the oil pump and the side of the front cover. Apply a continuous bead of RTV liquid gasket to the cylinder block mating surface of the oil pan as shown. Install the oil pan and tighten the mounting bolts in order as shown. There are three types of mounting bolts. Refer to the following for locating bolts. They are shown as Nos. Tighten the transmission joint bolts to 55 ft. Install the rear plate cover and tighten the mounting bolt to 65 inch lbs.
Install the oil pan drain plug with a new drain plug washer. Tighten it to 25 ft. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. NOTE Wait at least 30 minutes after the oil pan is installed, to fill the engine with new oil. Add engine oil. Start the engine, and check for leakage of engine oil.
Stop the engine and wait for 15 minutes. Remove the oil pump from the engine. Remove the oil pump cover. Remove the inner and outer rotors from the oil pump body. Remove the regulator plug, regulator spring and regulator valve. Measure the oil pump clearance using a feeler gauge. Body to outer rotor position 1 should be 0.
