I have that experience and understand it very well. My mother has developed very serious state of dementia since July last year. I visit her every year, but the most recent visit from October and November this year brought me biggest consolation ever.
I witnessed my nephew's fervent love for my mother and consoled. My nephew has lived with my mother throughout his life and taken care of my mother. I felt the passionate love in three of us, in my nephew, me, and my mother even though she can't tell who is who. Besides those positive points, the book is generally filled with information and episodes without depth or connection.
You don't become willing to help other people because you are told that it is good to help others. You need to be moved by certain philanthropic activities introduced that led other people be happy or free from their unhappy condition. But this book introduces a lot of authors' short episodes sporadically and redundantly. This type of books could be written much more systemically based on long research, or survey and more interestingly then the books will induce or encourage people to be more interested in helping the needy.

It is important to understand that like other skills, we need to work on giving to get better at it. Jamal and Mckinnon do a great job at outlining that there is more to giving than just donating money. Time, skill, advice, and love are all things we can give to each other. I think the purpose of this book is to go and start donating and participating in charities and start volunteering work, but I took other things instead, like some points I might fix with my family, myself, my relationships, my habits.
I was bored while reading because it was repetitive, but I was like listening to an old man's advice in this life and kept reading the book.
